The Future of Mindful Medicine, Now.
The Professional Yoga Therapy Institute® is the bridge, built upon scientific research, that joins the hands of biomedical healthcare and biopsychosocial care delivered through the lens of Medical Therapeutic Yoga (Garner 2016). Integrating the Medical Therapeutic Yoga (MTY) methodology enables clinicians to improve patient satisfaction and patient outcomes, and do both with less overhead and better longterm results. Completing the PYTI® program will change your practice. We believe, and as many of our students and graduates have attested, it will also change your life. Our motto is #transforminghealthcaretransformingyou.
The Professional Yoga Therapy Institute® is the premier medical post-graduate level certification for training on yoga in healthcare worldwide. Founded in 2000 by Dr. Ginger Garner, PYTI® is also the longest-standing continuing international program teaching licensed medical professionals how to use yoga in a clinical environment.
The PYTI® program falls under an umbrella of categories for study:
- Integrative Medicine
- Functional Medicine
- Complementary Medicine
- Biopsychosocial Model of Care
- Biomedical Model of Care
With a field-tested curriculum that embraces and teaches approaches to both preventive and pathophysiological-based patient care, PYTI® has partnerships with multiple universities and research being completed at various levels of evidence. Programs at PYTI® are tailored exclusively for licensed medical providers, setting high standards for post-graduate and post-professional yoga education.
The skills and knowledge you attain at PYTI® and assimilate through your scope of practice as a licensed medical professional are immediately applicable in the clinic, and is also immediately applicable to all patient populations across the lifespan.
Our graduates report improved quality of life, improved patient outcomes, shorter treatment times, increased self-efficacy and patient adherence, lower burnout and compassion fatigue, less on the job injuries due to less requirement for high level manual therapy, and higher job satisfaction with less overhead and expense. In fact PYTI® Founder, Dr. Ginger Garner, started the Institute because she also experienced all of these positive changes in her life and career after implementing and solidifying the methodology she developed and teaches, and what has now become the PYT Certification.
The PYTI® program consists of a 15 step program as follows, which is a combination of on-site and online learning:
- ONLINE MODULES - Modules 1-7, 10, 11, and 12 are distance-learning modules. These modules are available from third party content partners accessible via our website.
- ONSITE MODULES - Modules 8, 14, and 15 are on-site week-long intensive lab courses that are held in a retreat setting in Emerald Isle, NC USA and various other locations.
- COMMUNITY PROJECT - Module 13 is a publication-ready final course project which takes what you have learned, in a 1-on-1 mentor setting with Dr. Garner and faculty members, and readies it for practical application in your communities and clinical practices.
- Module 9 is not currently required for the PYT certificate, but we are currently developing leading-edge specialty courses developed by our graduates employing which employ MTY Methodology.
All students must have a valid and current license in their specialty field of practice in medicine, rehabilitation, or mental health.*
It is strongly encouraged that all students complete Modules 1-7 (Online Learning Modules) to gain experience with the evidence-based approach of MTY before enrolling. Previous yoga, meditation, or mindfulness experience can help but is not required.
*Special admission to the Professional Yoga Therapist Assistant (PYT-A) Program is a limited pilot program for the non-licensed professional who holds a medically-oriented degree that works in a clinical setting under the direct supervision of a licensed medical professional. Contact us for details for special admissions. If you are not a licensed medical professional and you are not working in a medical environment, you are invited to take the courses, however in this case we cannot award the certification. Students attending in this role can only take the courses for continuing education. Please contact us for more information.
Medical yoga is in its infancy and there are no accrediting boards (medical or nonmedical) that recognize it; however, our teaching standards set the international bar for post-professional competency. PYTI® content has been introduced at the graduate university level in multiple universities throughout the US and Canada, and our university partnership program continues to thrive and expand annually.
Want to become an Educational Partner? Please visit our Educational Partners page on our website for more information or contact our office.
The PYTI® program meets state board CE requirements for medical professionals and can be applied for approval on an individual basis by the PYT candidate. For our on-site courses, we are an approved CE provider by NCPTA for PTs and BOC for ATCs (currently the BOC approval is in work for 2018 and therefore not applicable at this time). NCPTA has reciprocity with many states, so you need to check with your state board for reciprocity. You may also seek individual approval with your state PT or other medical professional licensing board. Please contact your state board for requirements. For online courses, check with our educational content partners for boards and states where they have obtained provider approval.
On completion of the 15 Module program and mentorship with our faculty, your Professional Yoga Therapist certification will enable you to expand into new areas of practice, and to teach and utilize Medical Therapeutic Yoga with your patient population within the scope of practice of your medical license.
